Bethany Sisters in Northeast Celebrate Golden Jubilee

29 May,2012

The Congregation of Bethany Sisters known as the Sisters of the Little Flower of Bethany, founded by RFC Mascarenhas, in Mangalore, in 1921 celebrated the golden jubilee of their presence in Northeast India on May 28 at Bethany School, Guwahati. Bethany Sisters worldwide number around 1350 and work in 24 states of India and a few countries abroad.

The Congregation was founded to uplift the poor, especially the girls and women “by being  a leaven in the dough through the pastoral, educational, medical and social apostolate,” said, Sr  Sr Cleophas BS.

The first group of four Bethany Sisters arrived Northeast India in 1962 and  opened a convent and school at Kolasib, Mizoram. One of the pioneers was present for the jubilee celebrations. The service begun by the the pioneers in the field of education has grown and today there are 197 Sisters working all over Northeast and West Bengal in the fields of education, social work and medical care.  Among them are 67 local sisters.  They have 2 formation houses and 30 communities.

“The political instability, lack of communication means, insurgency, language  and cultural differences have always  caused great anxiety  to our sisters working here, said Sr Wilberta BS, the Mother General. “Yet, they exhibited indomitable valour and determination” she added Two books were released on the occasion: Leaven in the East ( History of the Congregation in the North East  by Sr Mary Naulak BS and  Unless the Seed Dies (The Life of the Founder)  in two languages –Bengali, and Mizo.  A CD with songs was also released on the occasion.

To mark the Golden Jubilee the Congregation has opened a mission in  the Miao Diocese in Arunachal Pradesh,  at Nalbari in Bongaigaon Diocese, and at Khayenpur in the Diocese of Agartala, informed Sr Noeline B S, the Provincial  Superior.
